| FYNBOS
Within 15 mins drive of Langvlei Dunes there are beautiful areas of
Fynbos. Here one can experience the beauty and amazing diversity of
the biggest floral kingdom on earth. From the tiniest Erica flowers
to stunning Protea blooms. This is an experience not to be missed.
Fynbos was the name the early settlers gave to the vegetation they
came across on the southern tip of Africa . They marvelled at its
beauty and its diversity. The Cape Floral Kingdom as it is now
called, consists of 9000 species and as such is the most diverse
Floral Kingdom in the world. Fynbos can best be described as an
evergreen, hard shrubland occuring on nutrient poor soil dominated
by small leathery leaved shrubs with evergreen grasslike perennials.
Most of the Southern Cape where Fynbos occurs consists Of the Cape
fold mountains that vary in height from 1000 to 1500 m with some
peaks reaching 2000m. From a distance these mountains look rugged
and bare but as one gets closer they reveal their hidden treasure.
Fynbos is a fire adapted vegetation. A fire every 10 to 14 years is
not only beneficial but essential for the recycling of nutrients and
to create the right conditions for seed to germinate. Fynbos is
adapted in many other ways. Some plants have specially adapted
roots. Leaves are adapted to keep their shape during drought
conditions and contain tanins to make them less palatable to
animals. 60% of the plants are adapted to flowering in the spring to
make use of the increase in the number of pollinators at this time.
The rest of the species bloom continuously throughout the rest of
the year so that at any given time one fifth of the plants are
flowering.
